South Rim and North Rim Information:

Millions of people visit Grand Canyon annually, most of whom visit the South Rim only.  The following information is an overview for the first time park visitor.

SOUTH RIM

Information Centers and Museums

Canyon View Information Plaza - located at Mather Point and open daily year-round, 8am to 5pm, additional open hours vary seasonally. Outdoor exhibits may be viewed anytime (however the lights at Canyon View Information Plaza are turned off at 9pm). Accessible only by free shuttle bus, a one mile walk or bicycle ride from Market Plaza on the new Greenway Trail, or a short walk from Mather Point. Several outdoor exhibits provide a variety of information about Grand Canyon National Park and what to do once at the park. Available facilities include restrooms, pay phones, bookstore, and shuttle bus stops. The canyon rim is only a short stroll away.

Kolb Studio - located in the Village Historic District, at the Bright Angel trailhead. Open daily year-round, 8am to 5pm, additional open hours vary seasonally. Once the home and business of the Kolb brothers, pioneering photographers at Grand Canyon, this building has been restored. The bookstore and auditorium are open to the public. Art exhibits are on display in the auditorium, admission is free.

Yavapai Observation Station - located one mile east of Market Plaza. Open daily year-round, 8am to 6pm, additional open hours vary seasonally. Contains temporary exhibits about the fossil record at Grand Canyon. A panorama of the canyon is visible through the building's large windows. Educational materials about the park and region are sold in the non-profit bookstore. Public restrooms located next to the parking lot.

Tusayan Museum - located three miles west of Desert View and 22 miles east of Grand Canyon Village on Desert View Drive. Open daily year-round (but may be closed due to inclement weather), 9am to 5pm. A visit to Tusayan Museum will provide a glimpse of Pueblo Indian life at Grand Canyon some 800 years ago, admission is free. A self-guiding trail leads through the adjacent 800-year-old ruin. Ranger-led ruin tours are offered daily. Educational materials about the park and region are sold in the non-profit bookstore.

Desert View Information Center - located at the park's east entrance on the South Rim. Open daily 9am to 6pm, except during the winter months when open as staffing permits. Public restrooms located nearby.

Grand Canyon National Park Library - the National Park Service library in the park headquarters building is available for anyone who wants more in-depth information or is working on a research project. Open 8:30 a.m.- noon, 1:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. Monday - Thursday, except holidays. (928) 638-7768.

Food

  • Canyon Village Marketplace - Located at Market Plaza. Open daily year-round, 8am to 7pm, additional open hours vary seasonally.
  • Delicatessen at Marketplace - Located at Market Plaza. Open daily year-round, 8am to 6pm, additional open hours vary seasonally.
  • El Tovar Dining Room - Located on the rim. Open daily for breakfast: 6:30am-11am; lunch: 11:30am-2pm; dinner: 5-10pm (Dinner reservations required: (928) 638-2631 ext. 6432); Lounge: 11am-11:00pm.
  • The Arizona Room - Located on the rim next to Bright Angel Lodge. Open daily for dinner (4:30pm-10pm) and for lunch during peak season (11:30am - 3:00pm). Closed January 1- mid February. Reservations are not accepted.
  • Bright Angel Restaurant - Located in Bright Angel Lodge. Open daily 6:30am-10pm. Lounge open 11am-11pm.
  • Bright Angel Fountain - Located outside Bright Angel Lodge on the rim. Ice cream and snacks. Open daily as weather permits.
  • Maswik Cafeteria - Located in Maswik Lodge at the west end of the village. Open daily 6am-10pm. Sports Lounge open daily 5pm-11pm.
  • Yavapai Cafeteria - Located at Market Plaza. Open daily 6am-9pm. Hours may fluctuate seasonally. Closed January 2-February 16.
  • Hermits Rest Snack Bar - Open daily year-round, 9am to 4pm, additional open hours vary seasonally.
  • Desert View Marketplace - Located at Desert View. Open daily 9am-5pm.
  • Desert View Trading Post - Located at Desert View. Snackbar open daily year-round, 9am to 4pm, additional open hours vary seasonally.

CAMPING EQUIPMENT
Camping, hiking, and backpacking equipment may be purchased or rented at Canyon Village Marketplace (general store). Limited repair services are also available.

RELIGIOUS SERVICES
Religious services are offered in the park and the surrounding community. The National Park Service does not endorse any group or message. Check current schedules posted in the park at Mather Campground (near Entrance Station), Shrine of the Ages, and the information kiosk near the Post Office.

SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS

  • Alcoholics Anonymous - Meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, 7pm in the Kachina Room, Kachina Lodge and Tuesdays 10am in the piano room at the Recreation Center. Meetings are open, non-smoking, and members of all 12-step programs are welcome.
  • Grand Canyon Rotary Club - Meets Thursdays at noon in the Canyon Room, El Tovar Hotel.
  • Lions Club - Meets twice monthly on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays at 7pm at the Grand Hotel in Tusayan. For information call (928) 638-0666.

NORTH RIM

Highway 67 into the North Rim remains open to public travel through mid-November, but from mid-November on, Highway 67 may close for the season on short notice due to major storms and heavy snowfall. Check with the Arizona Department of Transportation for road conditions.

During daytime visitation, from mid-October until the final closure of Highway 67, emergency services ONLY are provided by the National Park Service. Visitors are reminded to pay special attention to their gas gauge, since gas will no longer be available in the park. Food service will not be available. Only portable toilets will be provided.

Once the Arizona Department of Transportation closes Highway 67 south of Jacob Lake to vehicle traffic for the winter season, the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park also closes to vehicle traffic.

The gate at Jacob Lake is closed and locked and the gate at the North Rim entrance station is closed and locked. The National Park Service does not unlock the entrance station gate for public vehicle access until North Rim visitor facilities open up for the season in mid-May.

During the winter period when the North Rim entrance station gate is closed, the only public access into the national park is on foot, skies, or snowshoes. Snowmobiles are not allowed inside Grand Canyon National Park. Hikers and cross-country skiers are permitted to use the park's group campsites throughout the winter months if they have obtained a permit through the park's Backcountry Information Center.

North Rim Visitor Center - located adjacent to the parking lot on Bright Angel Peninsula. Park and regional information, maps, brochures, exhibits, and bookstore. Open mid May to mid October, from 8am to 6pm, daily. Interpretive programs offered seasonally. Public restrooms located in back of the building.


Food
Facilities listed below are open mid-May to mid-October only.

  • Grand Canyon Lodge Dining Room - Located on the rim. Open daily daily for breakfast, 6:30am-10am; lunch, 11:30am-2:30pm; dinner, 4:45-9:45pm. For dinner reservations call (928) 638-2612 ext. 160.
  • Snack Shop - Located in the Grand Canyon Lodge complex. Open 7am-9pm daily.
  • Saloon - Located in the Grand Canyon Lodge complex. Open 11:30am-11pm daily. Open for gourmet coffee and pastries 5:30am-10:30am daily.

A post office is available at the North Rim located in the Grand Canyon Lodge complex.
